I've got a 1998 Basscat with a 200hp Mariner on it. Last fall, after it started making a ticking noise and wouldn't go into gear smoothly, I had a family friend take a look at it. He adjust the shifter cable and told me to try that. He said he didn't know how long or if it would work because the cable was adjusted all the way out.
Took the boat to a tournament last weekend for the first time since it got worked on. It seemed fine at first, but after a few hours of stop and go fishing and running up into a few places that were a little too shallow, the noise has returned. The best way I can describe it is a knocking sound like if you were lightly knocking on wood, that occurs about 1 to 2 times a second if I'm running at full speed. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!

First thing I would do is check the lower unti oil and make sure you do not have any shavings or any water.
