200hp OceanPro stalls in reverse

When I go astern the gear engages then as I increase throttle it staggers and dies. Forward is fine. I tried disconnecting the wire to the shift switch.
Background - I have been struggling with a remote fault but it now seems to work and gear and throttle levers look as if they move correctly.
How does it even know I'm in reverse?
This all took place tied up at the dock.

The motor is 1998. It idles at 500/600 rpm. It used to be a bit faster I think.
It runs perfectly except for this.

Agree with a tad more idle. Reverse is more stressful on the engine because the prop exhaust is fighting water rather than filling a water vacuum causing more engine back pressure and in reverse you are pushing against the blunt transom whereas in F you are flowing the refinements of the hull's aquadynamic capabilities.

Idle is typically 700 in gear with throttle closed.
About 1100rpm on a hose.

my question would be why it is now idling so low...bad plug?, weak coil? weak fuel pump/fuel clog/filter/? air leak into fuel line? dirty carb? out of time? or compression loss? linkage out of sync? many issues could be the problem. If the motor runs as it has been at higher rpms with no noticeable power loss or misfiring, then I would change my spark plugs and if that didnt fix it idle it up to about 1K on the muffs.
