Hello folks,
Here is my dilemma on a 2010 50 hp. Mercury with pt&t that has been giving me grief , this is a new boat to me so I am not too familiar with.
the first couple times I took it out it was ok then I started having problems like having a short under the hood, brought it in and had the guy I bought it from and had a loose connection is what he claimed.
So I take it out again it cranked ok and did not have any problem till I taxied away from the launch and throttled up and wouldn't go over 3500 rpm.
Man was that a bummer so I fought with it for a while then went back in to launch, well needless to say I brought it to another mechanic and he diagnosed it as a carb problem well after $400 + dollars and a couple more trips back to him I still am having the same problem not wanting to get up on step and go over 3500 rpm.
Truthfully I don't even think it is a fuel problem anymore I think it is electrical because of the original problem with the short and smoke under the hood.
Any input or sugestions on where to look next would be appreciated .

Thx.

Some spark plugs will fire fine at low pressure so you think there good. When they reach a higher pressure they can cut out and not fire. Maybe you want to change the plugs and give it another go. This is a simple cheap thing to do and won,t hurt anything by giving it a try. Come back with results and the forum can take it from there. Also use a timing light on each plug wire to insure the cylinders are getting fire to each at the 3500 cut out point. It,s possible the high speed windings in the stator are bad and testing by your manual would have to be taken to see if it,s good or not.

Your best bet is to take it to a authorised Merc Dealer with factory trained techs and have them look at it. The newer motors have the EMC module and only run on 2 cyclenders till a certian RPM then the other cyclenders will start to fire. A dealer with the program and computor cable hookup should be able to run a test on the motor and it will or should tell just what has happened to any electrial parts of the motor. Be sure to take your check book. Just guessing as to what is the trouble and replacing parts will have the same effect on the check book and still not fix the trouble. These newer motors are as bad as new cars when it comes to repairing them. Without a computor and the program for the motor and the training one is sort of SCR**ED when it comes to working on them.

Maxz695 ,the plugs were changed forgot to mention that .....Update!decided to take advise of oldm570 and bring it in to an authorized Merc dealer.ready in it for over $400,so i drop it off and get a call the next day saying it is ready and i am amazed well this is what i was told the carbs adjustments were way off and there was a kink in the fuel line under the back compartment in the line going to the tank and changed the plugs.
So looks like the first guy i brought it to screwed up the carb adjustments up and changed the fuel pump diaphram and put the wrong plugs .looking forward to putting it in the water to try it out Thanks for the input guys appreciate it.

Glad that it is running. Sometimes it is not cheaper nor easy fix on the newer motors. And another plus is you now know where to take it for the tough troubles to be fixed. Enjoy your toy and be safe when doing so .
