My owners manual is very vague...

I have 23hours on my boat and it has just passed the engine break in 20hr time frame. At the end of the literature it says the first service inspection should be carried out after 50hours of operation. It says don't remove the break in oil until after the 20hour break in schedule is completed.

Under the section "adding oil after break in period" the owners manual says I must use mineral oil for the first 150hours or 3years which ever comes first.

Under the 100hr maintence schedule its listed like this...

1)3.0L, 5.0L, and 5.7L
2) MUST use mineral oil for the first 150hrs or 3year which ever comes first.

So does that mean the 4.3L isn't required to use mineral oil?

I went to a volvo dealer and he gave me SAE30 full synthetic. I'm not sure what I am suppose to do.

Should I just wait until i winterize my boat to change out the break in oil, I don't think I'll hit 50hours.

I dont have a specific answer to your question, but this how I do it.

Break in is mostly about getting the rings to seal.Full synthetic oil is very slippery, which is why you should use mineral oil for break in.You also shouldnt baby the engine, but not full throttle it either.Mercruiser has great instructions for break in,its worth looking it up.

During break in you should vary your rpms, never run wot or very low rpms.Do not use full throttle but dont baby it either.

When it comes to oil the sooner the better, there is alot of filings in the oil that doesnt do any good to the engine.I would recommend changing the oil after 5 h on a new engine, next time mayve at 15-20h,and then at 50.After that I would switch to what oil you like to use and follow the manufactures advise.

Ayuh,.... I agree with MCL,... 150hrs is a Looooong Break-in time.....

Just so's to not start yet another Oil thread,....
At 23hrs,...
I think you're safe to switch to Whatever oil you intend to use for the whole time you intend to own the boat....

Yea it seemed quite long to me as well, but I don't want to go voiding the engine warranty. I have been monitoring the oil level every time I've taken her out and she hasn't consumed anything noticeable.

I've built car engines before and broke those in just fine, and unfortunately waited till I hit my boats 15hour mark before I even attempted to wake board behind her so I wouldn't put too much stress on the engine right away. I Followed their guide towards how fast i should be running the boat, etc.

Thanks for the reply guys, and Bond-o..... the damn chaumont boat launch is a Royal PITA!!! There is a hidden rock or something on the left side launch which bit my prop that was trimmed all the way up. Don't know if you launch there but beware, as I am still not a happy camper till this day.

I think I was having problems with the language barrier of the Swedish vs. US and so was my boat dealer... I was thinking "mineral oil" was referring to the clear mineral spirits you use on wooden cutting boards.

Mineral oil as in straight NON-synthetic oil. Which makes sense to me now since we've always used junk cheap auto parts store brand oil for normal engine break ins.
