Hi,

I just got a brand new Tohatsu 5hp outboard to replace my stolen 1962 sea king outboard and I have some problems. When I try to start it............well it wont start. I keep pulling and pulling with all kinds of choke positions and nothing happens. It will often start to "chug" very very slowly then spit and die. It will start eventually and run great but starting is a pretty good problem that I would like to solve. Please help.

You've got a warranty - use it. Take it to the nearest authorized shop and let them make sure it is setup correctly, or at least have them watch you try to start it.

I will mention that the Tohatsu 20 4st that I have takes a LONG time to start after the float bowl has been run dry. I prime it with the bulb on the fuel line until there is good pressure in the line, and then crank for a good 30 seconds (not all at once, of course). Makes me very glad for electric start.

My Mercury Bigfoot (pretty close to the same motor and from the same factory) has a primer bulb on the motor which seems to make for much faster "cold/dry" starts.

Maybe Tohatsu Guru will have a better suggestion...

Rowen,

You are under warranty. What does your dealer say?

The likelhood of the engine having a problem is fairly remote. Usually it's an operator malfunction causing a no start. Ye local dealer will be happy to show you what you are doing wrong.
