we just got this boat new and my dad is a bigger guy and is really strugglin to get up on his slalom ski. he has been skiing all his life hadn't had a boat for about 10 years, but he got up on the 2nd try (with much difficulty) and hasnt got up since. he is pretty disheartened about so i thought i would ask the boating experts about passenger placement & trim position.... i was thinking trimmed DOWN all the way and maybe passengers in the bow? boat came w/ 23 prop, and so we just went out and got a 21.... boat ran 45mph @ 5000 rpm (i think). we just got the prop put on so looking to give it a try this week. any trim suggestions or passenger positions or any other suggestions are greatly appreciated! we bought the alum. prop vs. the stainless bc we are in man made lake with shallower water and potential encounters with logs/rocks. didn't know how much extra stainless would actually affect?

thanks!

Watersports 'what to have list':

Modern 4-5 blade SS prop w/vent holes
Trim Tabs
Power trim, which is set in/down all the way on hole shot
Weight properly distributed in boat.
Honest assessment of load on boat (4-5 people in boat and slalom skiing = BIG load. The skier being the biggest load. 2-3 people is probably reasonable as a max)

If you want to run one prop and not switch props, you slightly 'underprop' the boat so that when lightly loaded the engine can exceed the max RPM range upper end slightly. In that case, you self-limit RPM. When the boat is loaded up for water sports, the engine RPM at max throttle should fall somewhere into the acceptable max RPM range.

You made the correct first move by dropping 2 inches of pitch. You'll lose some top speed, but she'll come out of the hole much better. Since you have already run it with the 21, you should have felt the difference in acceleration.

As others have said, start with the trim full down/in , then trim up as necessary after you get up to speed.

Have your spotter/passengers as far forward as possible on take off to get up on plane faster.

Your dad may need one of those Connelly "Big Daddy" skis. :)

Re: 2011 larson lx 850 hole shot help!

I've got a '11 Bayliner 185 with a 21 pitch prop and I have problems with a heavier boarder/skiier when it comes to the hole shot. I have done enough water sports in my day to distribute the people in the boat to the proper places. I just ordered a 4 blade 19 pitch prop and kow it will do a much better job. Back when me and my buddies were tearing up the lake in our teens and weighing no more than 150 lbs soaking wet, any motor or prop size would yank us out of the water with ease. I am sure I will lose about 4-6 mph on the top end. But I will trade that off for a better hole shot anyday.

I have a 2011 Larson LX 850 with the 190 hp V6. I use a 23" aluminum for travelling and a 19" 5 blade stainless steel prop (Mercury Hi 5) for tow sports. The 5 blade is like putting a set of 4:11 gears in the rear end of your car. It pops out of the hole almost immediately. You'll have no problem pulling a skier of almost any size out of the water. Pulling an 8' diameter tube with three adults on it is easy. You'll still be able to hit about 42ish mph. The 23" gives me 53 mph when I'm solo. If you have underwater hazards, I would recommend using the stainless over the aluminum prop. Your plastic coupler sleeve (Flow torq) will break before you do any serious damage to the prop. You'll likely do significant damage to the aluminum one though. It doesn't take much damage to render a prop nearly useless. I always have my 9.9 kicker with me just in case. My trim is all the way in when I'm picking up a load. When you trim out, you'll have to go by feel. I usually have someone up in the bow and someone next to me. I don't like a crowded boat when towing in case I have to react to an emergency. Getting people to move out of the way or stand up so I can access something under a seat is time wasted.

Switch to a 14-1/4 x 20p Michigan Wheel 4 blade Aluminum Vortex propeller. It will pull the skier up much easier, and only lose a couple MPH at WOT and still be in correct RPM range at WOT.

Just curious to know how you would mount your kicker to the boat given the event where your main engine/prop goes south on you?

Good question, I would like to know as well. Since his 3 year old post says the "kicker" is already on another boat...

I have a 12 ft. fiberglass boat with a 9.9 4 stroke Yamaha (2010). The boat weighs over 250 pounds and is rated for a max 14.5 hp.

Why you no read rules and post on 2 year old thread? o_O OP hasn't logged in since his last post.

On the port side of the swim platform I have a square stainless tube mounted that holds a spare engine. It was made by a local company for a couple hundred bucks.

It never occurred to you that I may have several boats and several engines? Anyway...a local shop made a mount for me out of square stainless tube and a thick plastic part to mount the engine on. It was a couple hundred bucks and I installed it myself.

My apologies. I was only trying to help out a fellow boater and any who may read this thread. Apparently helping out seems to be beside the point here. Again, my apologies for trying to help someone. I'll keep my advice and experience to myself.

Not saying to not help. If you open a thread that has a red bar at the bottom chances are that (1) the issue is resolved or (2) no one had the info they needed and after 2 years I'm sure he either fixed it or does not have that boat anymore. That rule is in place more for people to not bring up dead topics with new questions. Most people will overlook a post where the original post is 3 years old and only has 3 replies.

YoungMind summed it up in a nutshell. This is a very large forum with many new threads started on a daily basis. We consider any thread over 90 days old a dead thread and should not be responded too. Hence, the red box that was present when you replied.

Point taken. I trust the other individuals that responded have also been chastised accordingly.

Not chastising, just explaining why we have the 90 day rule. It was directed at you since you were the one that resurrected this dead thread. Some members reply after a thread is resurrected not knowing it "was" over 90 days old. I know I have been one of those members.....
