Hello everyone, I'm getting ready to change out the impeller/water pump on my 9.9 High Thrust kicker. What I don't know is this. Do i need to have the shift selector in neutral like my F115 or does it need to be in gear. IF it needs to be in gear does it need to be forward or reverse? I thought it was neutral but when I went to take the lower unit off, it seems to be hanging up, so I wanted to check with the pros. Thanks for the help! John

1.I think it's neutral, you need to disconnect the shifter so you can drop the lower unit, you might have to remove the midsection cowling to disconnect the shifter ,so you can drop the lower unit.
2.It's best to have a factory service manual if your going to work on your motor,it makes it easy..
3.If this is your first impeller change, U-tube explains it perfectly.

shift shaft on larger motors are splined and slip apart
but some of the smaller motors have a threaded connection you have to take apart
removing the water intake screen on some was needed to get to the connector or maybe some thing else.

as far as which gear to put it into depends on what position you needed the connector to unscrew it

Thanks for the reply guy's. I figured out that it had to be in reverse to drop the lever far enough down to get to the nuts. Got the lower unit off with no problem and replaced the impeller and all new parts. Put everything back together and buttoned everything up.

The only problem now i see is that when the lever is in reverse, the prop spins both ways freely as if it is in neutral. I put the lever in neutral and the prop doesn't turn freely. It seemed pretty straight forward when I screwed the cable back on. What could have I done wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John

Put it back together the exact same way you took it apart.
You took it apart in reverse to get to the bolts, so the shift shaft has to be in reverse, the shifter has to be in reverse, screw the cable back on to the exact same place.

Thanks for the reply Tom. I did put it back together the way I thought I had it. I did make the mistake of not counting the threads on the lock nut, but I thought I screwed the coupler down to where it was. Could i have accidentally moved the lower shift rod while taking the lower unit on or off or would that have taken a lot of force to do? I was very careful taking it on and off. Thanks John
