Due to some mishaps in buying my new boat, I didn't get any manuals for the boat, motor, or accessories. I am familiar with the typical method of flushing my motor by attaching the muffs to the lower unit and running the motor. My old rig was a 94 Merc Two Stroke, a basic outboard.
My new rig has a 2012 Merc EFI Four Stroke. It has a hose connection set up so that a hose would fit over the water output. I've been told to flush this motor I need to attach a hose to this connection, run the hose, and start the motor. I understand this motor has a high pressure water pump and it spits water like it's trying to put out a fire. It doesn't make much sense to me to attach a hose to the water output, run current backward against a high pressure water pump, and run the motor with no water at the lower unit.
I have seen new flush points like this on other motors. The newer Yamaha 2 Strokes have a hose connection down at the base of the motor outside the engine cowl. But I know on those you are only supposed to run the water and not start the motor.
Is anyone familiar with this system? Is this the right process for flushing this motor? Or should I stick with muffs on the lower unit?
