Hello folks,
I just bought a new Bass Tracker pro team 175 TXW with a 2012 Merc 60 hp 4 stroke EFI and I like the motor by the way. It's quiet and has plenty of power
This is my first 4 stroke and I'm slowly learning as I go and patiently breaking in this motor the best I can for my first experience owning a new boat. My sales rep helped me out as best he can but its difficult to explain to me if I'm not actually doing it and sharing my experience with other to see if I'm doing this correctly. So I need you experienced 4 stroke owners to feed me input.
Well the manufacture operation break in guideline specifically says:
1. For the first hour of operation, run the engine at varied throttle settings up to 3500 RPM or at approximately half throttle. This is what I did: Ran the outboard in the lake with the boat load in 10 min increments at 1200 RPMs then to 3500 RPMS then slow it down to 2000 RPMS then back to 3500 RPM and slowly back down to idle for a second then kick it to 3500 RPM and keep it at 3500 RPM for a bit and slow back down to idle speed for a second then turn it off to cool down. I would repeat this process again every 10 mins or so for the first hour at different varied RPM's. Does this sound correct or some what ok? So I completed this step, My first hour of the break in.
Now I have about 10 mins in this next step, for the second hour, but I had to got to work loaded it on the trailer and left. I will finish the second hour sometime this morning.
2. For the second hour of operation, run the engine at varied throttle settings up to 4500 RPM or at three-quarter throttle, and during this period of time, run it at full throttle for approximately one minute every ten minutes. This is what I did for the first 10 minutes before I had to leave the lake: For some reason I feel confused on this part;/ I ran the boat up to 4500 RPM then back down to 2000 RPM then hit to 4500 RPM then down to idle speed for a short second then kick it down to 4500 RPM then gradually down to 2000 RPM then up to 3500 RPM then to 1500 RPM and heard the gear make a noise in the lower unit, oops it was ok though, then gracefully and slowly build back to 4500 RPM, then 10 mins was up so I kicked her down at full throttle for 1 minute and boy she flies
So does this sound right? What's confusing me is this part. Varied throttle speeds up to 4500 and during this period of time, run it at full throttle for about 1 min every ten minutes. So what I'm thinking is varied speeds up to 4500 RPM for 10 mins then chit can it at full throttle for about a minute, then gradually bring it back to low RPM for a bit come to idle for a sec and turn it off to cool down. So am I doing this correctly. I will repeat these steps till my second hr is completed. I just wanna know if I'm doing this right before I proceed any further in the 2nd hr. 2nd hr break in is confusing me for some darn reason.
Step 3. The next eight hours I under stand don't go full throttle over 5 mins. After I hit 10 hrs, off to the shop/dealer for its routine oil and gear lube change due to having logged down from the dealer for maintenance reasons for Mercury warranty and if I ever sell this boat the second person will be getting a boat that was broke in right
