Hi everyone, some persons mention removing the thermostat on the 3.0L engine to fill the water jackets with antifreeze. IS this the normal process? Anyone know where to get some detailed information like the manual for this because the book that came with the boat is not good.
Thanks!

Is that motor a Mercruiser I/O? If so you may repost in the I/O forum.

Thanks, I found out after, you can do it this way but better to let the leg suck up the antifreeze.

Introducing Antifreeze thru the water intakes is a really inefficient way to winterize an I/O. It also has great potential to do such a poor job that the block can easily crack, due to residual water. The best way is to drain the block of water, introduce antifreeze to the block via the recirculation hose (on the block water pump) until you see it drain, and then install the drain plugs and fill the block. Do the same with the manifold. It will take about 3 -4 gal of straight antifreeze to do it. You can drain, capture and reuse the antifreeze next winter. I urge you to read the I/O forum post on this matter. Alternatively, rebuilt motor longblocks are only a couple of grand, not including installation, if you crack your motor.

Thanks Chris Supreme Mariner, I found a post "http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser-i-o-inboard-engines-outdrives/how-winterize-your-engine-drive-178695.html" that discusses even taking off the outdrive, a bit extreme I think. Is that the post you're referring to?

Thanks!!
