New member here. Didnt see a new member intro area so I'll just post here with a bit about me and my dilemma.
Avid boater, love being on the water. Have had an assortment of water craft over the years. Current line up is a old but very nice tracker magna, in the process of hurting it and making it the way I want it. Primary boat is my lowe roughneck 1860. Use it for everything from regular fishing, to cruising around, to duck hunting now and set up with lights and a genny for bowfishing.
Now......onto a problem. More like a concern. I've posted this on one other forum and the answer i got makes sense but figured I'd get a few more idea or opinions.
2013 mercury, 40hp efi. Motor has 40 hours on it. Always maintained, never abused and rarely ever does it see WOT. In mint shape, like it left the showroom. When initially starting to give it gas, it is ultra quiet, the way a modern 4 stroker should be. However, once the boats speed matches the given throttle position, it goes from quiet to LOUD...as in, loud like an old 2 stroke, like a old lawnmower loud. I was told that the noise is coming from the exhaust relief above the cavitation plate. Well I took it out this weekend and watched as the boat picked up speed. Sure enough, as soon as the water level went below the cavitation plate, the noise increased and the prop is for sure below the surface. Now my boat is equipped with float pods but it did this prior to them being installed. Motor only has one hole set to go before its maxed out as far as lowering it goes, but ideally, I'd like it to be raised as I do alot of shallow water boating.
So what do you all think? Mercury design flaw? Mechanical problem? Or that's just the way mercs are.....
