So I can get this really good deal on a 15HP tiller merc outboard for ~$1700. I got quoted the other day for a brand new 15HP remote short shaft at ~$3000. The new obviously has a full warranty, the used 15hp tiller has a 3 year warranty.
My questions are which kit is required for conversion exactly. The motor is NOT electric start. Also, will this work void the 3 year warranty for the used motor? On a scale of 1-5 how difficult is this?
I have seen some outboards with tiller to remote conversions before and they all had the throttle and shift cables coming out the side of the motor through the cowling- are they all like this? If so, do I need to dremel out parts of the cowling?
Lastly, if anyone has done this, how well does it work? Is it difficult to pop in and out of gear, is there poor throttle response? Just a general idea of it?
I ask because I think the $1300 difference might be worth NOT buying the standard remote model, what do you think?
