Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and really need some help. I was on the lake today and my boat motor would grind and vibrate when put into reverse and not just the shift part but once it was in reverse it would grind and jump every now and then like it wasn't catching the gear good, anyhow I went to load it on the trailer, missed the trailer by a bit and put it in reverse to pull back off of the wheel well, went into reverse grinded real good then didn't want to go back to neutral. I twisted it hard to get it to go back and the handle just spun freely and did not go in or out of any gear. It wouldnt crank because it was not in neutral so I got it home and pulled the pull cord then it would crank with the elec. Start but when I twisted the throttle it would only rev up and not spin the prop at all. Please help!

Has the lower unit been taken off recently (maybe to service the water pump)? If so, I'd definitely check the shift linkage to see if something is amiss there. Have you looked at the lower unit gear lube? See if it's clean or has some debris from the grinding? If it's not clean, then definitely flush it out. If you don't find anything wrong with the shift linkage then you will probably have to pull the lower unit apart to see what's actually grinding.
