Do you have red and black wires coming out anywhere?<br /><br />Even if you have electric start, you may not have charge capapbility. They were seperate kits.
Bearcamp - there wasn't a charging system offered on that engine, even as an option. Only with the new ignition system introduced in 1973 did they offer it.
I'm also curious about this. Just aquired a 16' Crestliner Sportsman '91 model with a 20 horse Johnson Seahorse on it. It's rumored to be a late '70s or early '80 model but I'm unsure how to find the exact year. I'd like to add charging and electric start to it if possible. I've come across starters and starter brackets around the net and see that iboats sells the stator and rectifier/regulator (similar setup on my motorcycle). Any pointers on finding the year of this outboard?
No, there is no charging system available for the '71. If you need to keep your battery topped off, try one of the solar chargers. They work well and are dirt simple...
