I just picked up a 20hp johnson 2 stroke outboard, and im wondering how to determine the year and model. Its electric start with controls, id guess maybe early 90s? I dont see an obvious tag like ive seen on smaller motors. It looks like the bottom end of the motor has been re-painted, but i dont see any evidence of a tag or sticker.

Are there any other numbers i can look for to give me an idea of what this thing is? Ill try to figure out how to post a pic and put a couple up.

Tag would be on the transom bracket. Earlier models used an aluminium plate that was rivet/screwed to the bracket. Later ones used a tamper-resistant label. If it was painted over, you should still be able to see its outline.

At a guess, I'd say 1992.

Did you look on the engine Block?Should be a I.D. there on silver disk/plug if not on the transom bracket.

I just looked it over again, there is nothing on the transom bracket as far as evidence of a sticker or plate at all. On the top of the bracket, it has 19K01 and 183057 stamped into it (i think, its only kinda half stamped and hard to read). There is also a small silver disc, like a freeze plug, on the side of the block. It has G3066551 stamped into it.

I made the 1992 guess based on comparing decals from an online replica outfit. Should get you close enough. A BRP stealer may be able to get you info based on the serial number - should be the G number you note.
