Howdy,

I am in the demolition stage of a partial deck replacement. I have removed all the foam and determined that the stringers are all in good shape, except the little ones on the sides. I am not sure if the picture will be very helpful, but I could use some expert advise as this is my first project. The previous deck was nailed down. I have pulled the nails that I could and ground down the rest. What should I do to protect the stringers and prepare them for the new deck? Should I rough them up and re-glass them? I am planning to use epoxy. What cloth should I use, and how much of the stringer should I cover with the cloth, or is that a waste of time? I realize that I might not even be asking the right questions, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to I-Boats!

Have you Drilled into the stringers to verify that the wood is still nice and light tan colored and not dark brown and wet? Stringers should be fully encapsulated with resin and glass. My preference is Polyester Resin and 1708 Glass fabric. Check the links in my signature lines below.

No, but I will. If the wood is good, should I cover them with 1708 all the way to the hull?

Like I said check the Middle link below. It'll give you the info on how to do the stringers, Based on the pic I'd bet the bank that your stringers are NOT solid UNLESS the boat's been stored inside all it's life. You should core sample the foam as well

Sorry Woodonglass, I just read your reply more carefully and you already answered that. Thanks a million!

Ok, The demolition is well under way. When I took these pics I was planning to try to save the floor under the center console. I have since decided to bite the bullet and pull it. I wanted to reinforce all the stringers and decided it had to be done. It is amazing how these projects tend to grow! Prayers and advice will be needed when it comes time to put it all back together. I have pulled all the wiring, steering cables, and fuel line. Now all I need to do is to cut it out and then pull the gas tank to finish the demolition.

I have drilled the stringers and am delighted that they are all solid so far. I am planning to reinforce them with a layer of 1708 and vinyl-ester. Is that over kill?

For the deck I am using vinyl ester with a 6oz layer of E cloth on the bottom and two layers of 1708 on the top. This will take 3 sheets of MDO. Is it good practice to encapsulate each sheet first with a layer of cloth and resin on each side and tie them all together after installation with the second layer of 1708 on top? any advise would be appreciated.

I am also in the market for a new Yamaha throttle and new cables and wiring. Any body have a lead on an affordable source?

Thanks a million.

For the underside of the deck, one layer of 1.5 oz CSM with the Vinylester is all that's needed. Do this on your work bench. For the top of the deck, one layer of 1708 and 1 layer of 3-6 oz e-glass is all that's needed. Make sure to fillet and tap the deck to the sides of the hull with a 12" wide strip of 1708. The Second link below in my signature line has some good info on glassing your Deck, Stringers and Transom

Thanks so much. You have no idea how much I appreciate the help. I read your link on stringer prep and you mentioned cleating the stringers before reattaching the deck. I know what that means, but not the best way to do it. Do you have a link on that process or any suggestions?

Sorry I've been AWOL for a while. Cleating stringers is just simply attaching a 1x1 to both sides of the stringer tops. This gives you a wider platform and easier to attach the deck with either PB and weights or PB and screws.
