225 4 stroke Yamaha oil filter

I just did my 10 hour oil change on my new 225 4 stroke and had a cow over the price of the oil filter. Is there a after market filter that costs less than $20.00, that's what Yamaha charges for their filter. Also any tips on changing the filter. I had oil all down in the bottom of the engine.

hello<br /> welcome to the world of engineers. the crazy ones placed the filter in a position gauranteed to make a terrible mess. I guess its because engineers dont have to deal with the crap they design. no luck yet that I know of on the filter. I cut the bottom of a round 1 gallon anti-freeze bottle then split a long oval from the top side. then you can carefully work it under the stupid lip. (thats 2 engineering flaws on the same part). anyway then tilt the motor to full up and remove the filter. the filter must be loosend first or you run out of room. then when the filter first starts leaking it will try to run back up hill due to the lip. be ready.<br /> if done carefully it is possible to make zero mess. just took a bit to figgue it out. if you ask me its a dum-bass incredible engineering thing. almost as bad as the pressure relief valve.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Never ever under stood a pressure relief valve. If you read the Yamaha service manual it states to inspect and clean the pressure relief valve every 12 months. Ever seen the pressure relief valve on an HPDI. Da

Wah, Wah. I hate to hear grown men cry. Come on down and change the oil and fuel filter on my 7.3 Powerstroke diesel truck. Ford wanted $40 for a fuel filter but after market its $22. Oil filter ain't bad, its around $12, but pouring those 15 quarts of oil in gets tiring..

BTY Bencat, keep your receipts for the material and document the maintence on the engine since you're doing your own. If something happens to the engine while under warranty, you may need to prove you were following the service schedule. Even tho you could win in the end if you didn't, I would still use Yamaha filters and oil just to save a fight if something did happen.

Yamaha filters, both on inline and V6 4-strokes, have an anti-drainback valve in them, but it doesn't work well. If you let a warmed up V6 rest in the vertical position for a while, the oil drains back out of the filter and makes for a lot less messy replacement. Tilt the motor up first to drain oil from the cylinder walls and the nooks and crannies of the crankcase, then let the motor set vertical.

Rodbolt, Thanks for the reply, I had thought of a piece of tin but I think your idea is better. When I did the job I didn't have the proper size filter wrench so I drove a screw driver in the old filter to remove it. I bought the proper wrench yesterday and made sure the filter was tightened proper. Next year the job will be much easier. While I'm on the subject, I notice some salt build up on the engine. How should it be cleaned off and how often. Thanks to all that replyed.

hello<br /> if your going to do all you own maint make sure you do all of it. make sure you grease the 6mm lock bolt that holds the lock plate on the pressure relief valve. I have already had one come in broke off. I also at the pdi or 10 hour service pull all the valve cover bolts and grease them with yammalube grease. some engines will be years getting 400 hours and I worry that when they do those 6mm bol;ts aint gonna budge.<br /> hey BRIAN03. what is your trick on the HPDI pressure valves? man some engineer should be boiled in oil. I have no trick on it so far. just remove all the drivers and ECU and pray.<br /> seems to work so far but I know the broken bolts are comeing cause no one is doing the maintenece

If I think the customer is going to be with me for a while. I will take the time to pull all bolts and grease. Lower unit,power head and cover bolts to the power head bolts, bypass bolts and thermostat bolts. I wouldn't use a screw drive to pull that oil filter again. Yamaha wont warranty a filter housing if you break it.

Don't mean to sound dumb but where is the pressure releaf valve and what does it do? This is my first Yamaha so it is all new to me. I have always used never sieze on my bolts on other outboards, will it be ok on the Yamaha. I will pull all bolts that you suggest and lube the first good weather day we get, Thanks Ben

hello<br /> never seize will work as long as it is nickel based and not copper. I use yamaha marine grease or OMC triple gaurd. the pressure valve is well hidden on that motor. it serves to maintain a specified pressure range thought the RPM range on the cooling water ensuring no boiling takes place but neither does it over pressurize the system. if it sticks open just slightly it will cause the block not to fill and low water pressure followed a few minutes later by the sound of the hot horn(if it works). so it must be maintained but I think the f200/225 it has to be replaced if bad.<br /> good luck and keep posting

ED, Thanks for the info on the oil filter. I only have 16 hours on my engine but have not had either of the problems that you mention. Wonder if you might have some air in you tilt system or if something is loose. If your boat is out of the water it should be easy to find the problem. I can't imagine what the peeping noise is.

hello<br /> ED <br /> look for air in the trim cyl. if no air it may be the manual release scew. try loosening the manual release valve then cycle the cylinders with the pump and manually raise and lower the leg. close the valve and try again. if that does not work you will need dealer assistance. on the peeping noise. two things come to mind. one is you are hearing the cam drive belt which can be normal or two you are hearing the drive shaft rub on the bushing in the housing just above the water pump. yammaha changed the bushing on the 25 inch and 30 inch motors. there is a tech bulliten someplace about the modified shaft bushings.<br /> good luck and keep posting
