225 broken shaft removal

Hello,

I have a 1990's 225 gear case. the drive shaft snapped off at the pinion bearing today. I have gotten the gearcase taken apart all the way to the point where you remove the pinion gear. I cannot remove the nut, due to the drive shaft geing broken off. I can pull the prop shaft out slightly and push down on it, but I still do not have enough clearance to remove the pinion and small piece of shaft attached to it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Victor

I read the message wrong. I see now the shaft is to short for what I was going to suggest.

Could you put something like a steel strap, or small round stock bent into an [L] behind the pinion to jam it against the forward gear?

You mean press it aginst he FWD gear and then hold the nut and turn the prop shaft?

How about feeding a rag into the gears to jam them up?

I like that idea too... If I get the nut off, I am still not sure I can get the small piece of shaft out of the pinion. Since today is Mother's day, I am forbidden to work on the boat. I will have to try tomorrow evening... I will update and let you guys know how it comes out...

Re: 225 broken shaft removal

SUCCESS!!!! Actually my wife offered to help me this evening. She never ceases to amaze me!

Anyway, I shaved down a piece of PVC to hold the pinion centered up in the now destroyed lower bearing race. Next I shifted into reverse by manually pushing on the clutch dog. Finnally I was able to hold the nut with a 7/8 wrench while turning the prop shaft. At one point my wife, wwith her small hands and arms reached into the cavity and removed the nut with her fingers!!!

Once all was removed I was able to see the extent of the problem. For what reason I do not know the lower bearing sized and the drive shaft sheared itself in two half way down the lower bearing surface. All of the lower bearing rollers were flat on on one side and some had fused togather.

Any ideas on why this happened would be welcomed. had fresh oil in the lower and no sign of water intrusion when I drained it.

Now comes the fun part of removing the old bearing race and installing the new bearing. Again any ideas on how to remove / replace this part are welcomed. It looks to be a press fit.

thanks,

Victor

Re: 225 broken shaft removal

Most likely with the damage you listed housing is now beyond repair.
But the lower bearing is pulled up from the bottom to the top of the housing, Besure to remove phillips head screw first.
The new bearing is pressed down from the to make sure the numbered side of the bearing faces up so your pressing on it.
P.S. I've never seen a drive shaft break there so I have no insight as to the cause.

Maybe it was just OLD.... The housing looks good as far as I can see with a flashlight. I ordered the tool from GLM marine to press out the bearing. The outer race is still in the housing, all of the the rollers have fallen out.

Whare is this phillips head screw you mentioned?

Thanks,

There is a screw on the outside of the gearcase that holds the bearing in. All the needles need to be installed to remove that bearing or the race will break
then its not fun. hold the needles in with grease to remove. reinstall with needle bearing assembly grease. Any damage to the gears or the prop?

Re: 225 broken shaft removal

I inspected the gears very carefully. All I could find was a little scratch on one tooth of the pinion. Prop shaft looks good too. Where the drive shaft broke it looks like somoone cut in half with a laser the cut is so clean.

I hope I can find the needles for the lower bearing. I already threw most of them away. Maybe I will use the new needles from the new bearing in the old race to remove it and then re-install in the new race. I could just install the new needles in the old race and forget about pulling it, but I would be very scared that there could be unseen / unfelt damage to the old race. What do you think? I did order the special tool from GLM marine to remove the bearings but have never used it.

FYI I did replace the gears 2 years ago with the HD aftermarket ones from GLM. The clutch dog at that time was worn and would slip out of gear, so I decided to do all the gears. I did not however replace the lower bearing at that time. Shame on me!

Re: 225 broken shaft removal

I just got back last night and started to look at this project. I do not have a phillips screw ontheoutside of the gearcase holding the bearing in place... Do I just press it out then?

Not all gearcases had that retaining screw, just pull the bearing out. When you are set to pull the bearing, heat the housing in the bearing area all around with a propane torch. This will make alot of difference in how easy the bearing will come out.

I have see this several times and 90% of them had one of these in common: (A) hot foot (B) broken weld on shifter arm (C) idle to high (D) shift cable misadjusted (E) Raker prop( goes with a & c)

What do you mean by 'hot foot'?

All of the other items are in spec:
Shifter arm looks good
Idles at 650 RPM
Shift cable adjusted as per manual
I had my cheap 'fresh water lake' aluminum prop on the boat. I use a nice SS one for salt water.

I was doing about 35 MPH and 4k RPM when it broke.

Re: 225 broken shaft removal

The gear cases that didn't have a retaining screw had a retaining ring just above the pinion bearing. Look down in the g/c on top of the pinion bearing outer race. If you see a little loop of wire sticking out, get a long needle nose pliers and pull it out BEFORE trying to remove the the bearing race.

No retaining ring there. Maybe there needs to be one..... Well, I put it all back togather. I will take it to the lake on Sunday and see how she runs...

Re: 225 broken shaft removal

Ran Great! No problems with the gearcase. I set the timing on the motor (I have been trying to do thios for a year now.....) After running for about an hour the motor would not shift into FWD or REV. The bolt attaching the shift rod to the linkage came out. Thankfully it did not fall in the water. Put the bolt back in and off I went.

This is a 1988 block with a 1993 (or '94) gearcase, a 1992 Ignition system and 1996 cowlings. very cool to see how the parts can be interchanged....
