What is the purpose of the mechanical valve activated by the shift linkage on a 1990 225? I have repowered a 1994 model with a 1990 power head.
The 1994 model is strait forward. Just a bypass hose between the t-stat covers and a check valve. Water pump indicator is at the mid-section.
The 1990 model has hoses going from the t-stat housing to a valve activated by the shift linkage. It really does not appear to have T-stats.Just plastic check valves in the heads, and hoses leading too the shift linkage valve and out the lower motor cowling.
Thanks for any help.

Those check valves you are refering to are the thermostats. The water diverter makes the water circulate through the block at idle to allow the motor to warm up faster and to keep the motor warm at idle speeds to aide in idle quality. As you increase the throttle it opens the valve and allows the water to exit thru the pump indicator thus allowing the increased cooling for the faster engine speed.
