225 merc when accelerating motor goes to hi rpm with no acceleration

1996 mercury 225 seapro 26 ft mako center console, when trying to break plane motor will jump to hi rpms with no acceleration? goes normally at low rpms.. when we jump on it seems like transmission is slipping ? any help would be appreciated .. Thank You! just nursed it back to dock???
