I have a 225 OceanRunner on a 25' ProLine that has a 180 gal. fuel tank. I have approx. 50 gallons of pre-mix that dates back a year or better. (I disconnected the VRO) It starts and runs fine, smokes at start-up, (not unusual) my question is should I add some fresh gas without adding oil, maybe an additive? I've been told my gas has probably evaporated leaving me with a more oil:gas ratio.
Also, what would be the best way to burn off the old gas, running fast or more moderate. I just replace the plugs and don't mind doing it again after the old fuel is burned out.

Thing is MJ, you don't know how much gas has evaporated off. If you add gas, mix it accordingly with oil to the amount of gas you put in the tank....50:1 mix. I would also drain the carb bowls before priming. Get some fresh fuel in there.

Thank's OBJ, that's what I was thinking also. Too much oil is better then too little. I'm going to change my filters(fuel & water)in the morning. How do you drain the bowl's? Pull the fuel line?
How do you feel about Sea Foam or Sta Bil as an additive?

If you put more gas in there you will end up with 180 gallons of old gas. Many an outboard has eaten pistons cause of this. If you do it do not run it hard until you run it almost empty.

The problem with old gas is that most of the aromatic hydocarbons evaporate leaving you with just the base and some additives your octane goes down but no one really knows how much.

It would be better to disconnect the fuel line and drain it run it in the car or lawnmower. The 50 to 1 will not hurt them.

It always seems that more than a few posts here in the spring are about this only to lead to rebuild posts after they run the motor
50 gals = 100.00 to 150.00
powerhead 1800.00 to 3000.00 or more

Fuel looks cheap now :D

year old premix is a motor killer.
it wont lubricate properly and leaves a gummy sticky deposit on the pistons. the skirts will look like they were painted with black laquer.
but it keeps my horse in hay so run it if you must. and after the rebuilkd you will still have to drain the fuel and flush the system.
anything that goes into the intake tract of a carbed two stroke must lubricate and assist in cooling. if it does not it detracts from lubricating and cooling.
but its your motor,do as you wish. somefolks get 7's with each roll of the dice others get 3's.

With a product like Stabil, do you think a premix from as late as mid Aug - mid Sept will be okay for use on May 1.

stabil says it will treat fuel ,fresh fuel, for 6 months.
I use stor-n-start brand myself but even then 6 months is about it. after that all bets are off and retreating old gas is a waste of time.
anything more than 3 months and I reccomend draining the engine fuel system, if its not there it cannot go bad.
