225hp vro or 175hp vro which one ?

repowering my 21 foor stamas walkaround from a 200hp merc to a 175 or a 225, The 225 is more money, but i'm in a jam right now and can only afford the 175hp vro, should i just get the 175 now which i can afford or hold out a little longer for the 225hp motor.<br />both motors are 1990's <br /><br />anyone with ideas on performance diff from a 225 to a 175 ?

I don't know what the performance difference would be, but 50 HP is 50 HP. I think you would regret going to a lower HP model in the end. I would hold out if you can. Also, is your boat rated that high for HP?

thanks, boat is rated for 280hp max and it had a blown up 200hp merc on it

85merc.....What's the condition of both these motors? Is one older than the other(years)? Have you checked them both out, ie. compression, hours, have they been taken care of? If you hold out for the 225 and then find out it's been beat on and needs work but the 175 is in good shape you might be better of with the 175 or vise versa, if they are both about the same I would probably hold out for the 225. Obviously the condition of each will have a lot to do with your decesion. Lets assume for a minute that both are in comparable shape -- whatever that may be. <br /><br />A 1990 175 is basically the old big bore 235 crossflow rated at the prop. A 1990 225 is the open deck big bore looper. The 175 will never, ever produce the torque that the looper will. And torque is what counts. Not necessairly horsepower.<br /><br />Parts wise -- the 175 crossflow parts, especially the blocks, are getting more and more difficult to find. The looper parts are very easily found. <br /><br />Now, if the 175 is a 1991 -- thats another story.<br /><br />Good luck!
