235 johnson no reverse

thanks for all your past help but need one more thing, I recently rebuilt my 1984 johnson 235 powerhead (running great after 4 hours breakin) but when i put it back together I don,t have reverse. I set the linkage up with the shifter at the helm in neutral and maybe the shift connector under the carbs at the engine was in a different gear?? Forward and neutral work fine just need to know the correct way to do this setup my manual does not cover this at all. All worked well before rebuild.

The lower unit must be removed from the engine. The measurement must be taken in neutral. The measurment must be taken from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole. The measurement must be as follows.

1979 thru 1986 - All V/6 Crossflow models = (L) 22-1/16" - - (XL) 27-1/16" plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral.
