Would a 50hp motor work on a 24' pontoon? What size prop would it take? What are some guidelines to follow when
repowering an old pontooon? I guess I need a long shaft motor for this right? How long? thanks -jb
Yes a 50 will work with a good sound motor with a 4 blade pontoon prop depending on the weight, log size etc. you could expect a 18-20 mph speed with a light load.
If your running a fairly new Evinrude or Johnson 2 stroke a 12" or 13" prop should work.If the motor has a prop you could test with that and make a decission from that.Main problem with a 50 is at 20 mph it will be pushing its guts out.If you could afford a 75 or 90 you would have reserve speed/power for a load or a quick run to shelter. You could cruise at the 50s speed at 1/2 or 3/4 power of a 75 or 90
and the motor would be loafing. Of course you can cruise with the 50 as well but speed would be somethin like 15 or 16 mph.

I have a 24 ft Starcraft pontoon boat, I just got at the end of last summer so I only have had it out a few times. It has a 90 Hp Merc two stroke. What kind of speed should I expect out of it without hurting the engine. It's an 07 with very low hours on it.Most of the time it was on a boat lift before I bought it. How about RPM's. I used to have a 21 ft bow rider with a 230 hp I/O so speed and RPM's didn't matter that much. That baby would fly.
Hello, I have a 19' 08 Suntracker with a 40hp Merc Big Foot. The motor came with a 9 pitch cupped prop and the rpm read about 5800 WOT. I went to a 11 pitch uncupped prop and it dropped my rpm's down to about 48 hundred and put way to much strain on the motor. Went to the Black Max 14 x 10 extra cupped prop and that is just about perfect. hit about 5600 WOT and still get the bite I need while idling for docking. Love this pitch prop. Hope this helps.
I have a 1991 24' kayot with a 48 HP evinrude (1991). My GPS speed at WOT is 19 with light load. My cruise speed at about 3/4 throttle is 15-16 MPH. 13" prop. I can pull a 165lb adult on a knee board too.
My biggest complaint is noise, that 48 rude is a noisy motor.
Pontune,
I suggest you start a new thread. When you do, provide more info including number of logs, with or without strakes, estimated weight of the 8 people and gear, RPM at WOT, and any prop info you may know. It would also make a difference if you used GPS speed and had headwinds or a current in the water.
