I have a 12 volt minn kota W36....36 # of thrust? It has been rewired to run on 24 volt also,(flip a switch).....so do I have twice the thrust?

Re: 24 volt motor.....

Huh?????? Are you sure the switch doesn't just connect two batteries in parallel. That still provides 12 volts but it will run twice as long as on one battery. It does nothing for thrust. If the switch indeed feeds 24V to the motor (two batteries in series), it should be immediately apparent whether it gives you more thrust. Set the motor on high speed. Then set the switch to 12V. Pay attention to speed. Then switch to 24V (if that's really what it does). You should get a good boost in power. Keep in mind that motor will not live on 24 volts.

Re: 24 volt motor.....

Batteries are in parallel.....motor does react to 24 volts, I was looking for the math......does thrust double in 24 volt mode, motor was apparently rewound for 24 volts, and it seems big, ( large in diameter) in relation to the rest of the assembly.

How do you know it was rewired for 24V? I've never seen a 36lb thrust motor that required 24V but then there are a lot of things I haven't seen.

In Most Cases If It Is A 12 Volt And Your Running 24 Volts To It. Its Gonna Run Hot And Burn Up..ya Cant Plug A Lamp 110 V Into A 220 V Outlet...somethings Got To Give..go To 12 Save Yourself From Spending 250 Dollars On A New Motor..

If the batteries are in parallel you do not have 24 volts. You still have 12V. Batteries must be in series to provide 24V. Here are pictures of the wiring for both: You simply cannot run a 12v motor on 24v and have it last. Sort of like plugging a US appliance made to run on 110V into a 220V European outlet. You generally get sparks and smoke in short order.

This is parallel wiring: Note that the negative and positive on one battery are wired to the negative and positive on the other. The output is still 12V but the two batteries act like one great big one.

This is 24V (series wiring). Note that positive on one battery connects to negative on the other. Positive on one battery feeds the motor. Negative to the motor comes from the first battery.

If the motor had actually been "rewired to run on 12V or 24V as you said" it would need three wires (not two) between the trolling motor receptacle and the head unit on the motor. Here is wiring for a 12/24 motor.

Re: 24 volt motor.....

The fella that gave it to me said he had it rewired....it is wired according to the 12/24 diagram..........I have used it for up to an hour with no problems...holding position more than propelling the boat. Seems to work fine, I was just wondering if the thrust doubled, I have it on a pontoon boat, our local lake is windy, I was considering going to a 80# motor, but if this doubles the thrust, I will just put a 3 blade prop on it.....Thanks again for all the info

Re: 24 volt motor.....

If the boat is wired as shown for 12/24 operation, tell me how many wires there are coming out of the motor itself? I don't care how talented the person is that you got the motor from -- you do not simply rewire a 12V motor to make it operate on both 12 or 24. If the motor still has only two wires coming out of it, I guarantee you it has not been "rewired". It's the boat that has been rewired. I still contend you are merely feeding 24V to a 12V motor, OR that this switch is simply not doing what you are told it was doing. The only way I can tell for sure what you have is for you to draw the complete circuit -- from the batteries to the motor. The long and short of this is that if you feed 24V to a 12V motor you do not have a 12/24 motor. You still have a 12V motor.

Re: 24 volt motor.....

The motor does have 3 wire coming from it, and a toggle switch....12 volt is noticably slower than 24 volt position

Re: 24 volt motor.....

Are those three wires all tied (molded together) or does it look like a third wire was added at some time. Also, where is the switch located.

The wires are origanal....switch is located on the foot control, close to the mom/off/cont switch....sorry i havent been on in awhile...I do appreiciate the knowledge on this site.....
