ok all the previous 24 volt trolling motors i have installed have had three wires . which to me meant at exh indivual trolling battery i was 12 volts and could run 12 volt accessories of each battery individually. now i have to install a new trolling motor which only has a 2 wire plug. now wiring the battery will happen "at the battery" as opposed to "at the plug" when it was three wire.. ok so will i still read 12 volts at each individual battery if i put the voltmeter on a single battery? am i retarded or just over thinking this to much.

You are way over thinking the situation. Three wire motors were generally capable of operating on 12 AND 24 volts. If you have a two wire motor it will be EITHER 12 or 24 volt but you cannot run it both ways. If it is a 24 volt motor as you say, you need to two 12 volt batteries connected in series and it doesn't matter if you have a two terminal, three terminal, four terminal or 20 terminal plug and receptacle. You only need two terminals. Here is a 24 volt wiring system and you can still tap off 12 volts at either battery but you are safest doing it as shown in the diagram. If you take 12 volts off BAT #1 you run the risk of an accidental grounding which actually provides 24 volts to the electronics and it is instantly turned to toast.
