24 volt to 12 volt , really could use some help please

I have a 1978 Ebbtibe bass - ski w/ 70 Evinrude.<br />The current trolling motor is 12/24 volt. The old trolling motor is a Minn Kota 40 RM, that has a switch on the unit for 12/24 volt. In the toe panel in the front of the boat is a 3 position switch and the plug of course... <br />1) up position is for charging batteries.. <br />2) middle position is for normal (12 volt)... <br />3) down position (run)is for 24 volt.. <br /><br />I will be installing a Minn Kota PD 40# thrust 12 volt on my boat. <br /><br />What is the correct, safest way to convert or use the switches and plugs that I have now?
