24v to 36v

I currently have a 24v setup on my trolling motor, and am shopping for a trolling motor, something with more power. I have gotten an offer for a 81# 36v Motor. What would it take to change my set-up to 36v. Also is there a section of this forum where I might find a deal on a used or new trolling motor ? Thanks for your help. Jacob

You need three batties wired in series to provide 36 Volts to the motor. That may result in a space problem since many boats don't have room for them (at least close to each other). Check iboats.com (this site). You should also have a three bank on-board charger to charge those batteries. It would be a tedious job doing it with a 12 volt portable charger.

I currently have a two-bank onboard charger. Will I have to change the plug that the actual motor plugs into, and will I have to run an extra set of wires due to the extra battery. What about breakers, etc.

A two-bank charger is really two independent 12V chargers in a single package. With three batteries, you will need a three bank, or use the two bank for two of the batteries and use partable charger for the third. You could add a new single bank charger for the third battery if you don't want to relace the current charger. Your owners manual for the new motor will have motor current ratings and breaker requirements. Plug should be ok. You will need to move the positive wire (red) (or the breaker) on the current battery to the positive post of the new third battery, and run one new wire between positive on the second battery and the negative on the new third battery. You will now have 36 volts at the plug. Sounds more complicated than it really is.
