Ok. I have a three way charger in the boat. 1 battery is the boat and 2 run to the trolling motor. The trolling motor is 24v. I disconnected one of the batteries and forgot what posts the red and black were on.

1. Will a 24v motor run on 12v only?

2. Could they have wired the switch so it is 24v at the motor but the batteries are hooked up for 12v only.

It is a 94 stratos. The motor plugs into a twist lock plug. How can I test it for 12 or 24 volt?

Re: 24v trolling motor help.

OK -- one thing at a time. 1) No -- a 24V motor will not run on 12V. Actually it will but it will deliver very little power . 2) Does the motor have a 12/24 switch on it? 3) Is there a 12/24 selector switch on a separate panel at the front of the boat? 4) How many wires are there going into the trolling motor plug. Answer those questions and I'll get back to you. Sorry for all the questions, but I need to know what you have before I can tell you what you need.

No problem about the questions.

There is no 12/24v selector switch on the motor or the pannel

There are 4 wires going to the plug. There is another plug in the back with 4 wires to it also for a trolling motor.

Let me know.

OK -- so what "switch" were you talking about in your first post and what does it do?

Sorry it should have been plug, not switch.

Re: 24v trolling motor help.

If there are four wires running from the batteries to the receptacle, then the boat was originally set up for a 12V motor, or a motor that would run on 12 OR 24V. It was not wired for a 24V only motor. The diagram below is how your wiring should look. This diagram works for a motor that is designed to run ONLY on 24 volts. The diagram also shows a two-bank charger and how it should be connected. Again -- that scheme can only be used if the charger has isolated outputs. Lastly, if your trolling motor has more than two wires between it and the plug on its cable, you do not have a 24V ONLY motor. Its probably a 12 OR 24V and again this scheme will not work but I do have another that will. So make sure you know what you have.

Re: 24v trolling motor help.

Forgot to add that if you have a three bank charger, the third bank goes to the starting battery.
