I've had Yamahas and Mercs, and all I have left is merc....2 merc 25, 2-strokes, one is a 98' and one is a 89'. I love both of them and they perform like a dream. As for the boats, well....semi-v is the way to go with a aluminum hull. They are alot smoother ride than the standard flat front.

One more thing, you can't beat the shift on the tiller with the merc, otherwise you will have to turn and reach back to shift the Yamaha.

I was going to say Yamaha just because it's newer for better future resale. Mercs under 30 hp for certain years I think were all (and maybe still are) made in China anyway. So Japanese or Chinese its a toss up.

But I absolutely agree with the poster who pointed out the shift on the side with the Yamaha would be a deal breaker for me. I'd have to say the Merc cause I have a 2005 Merc 9.9 with the shift on the handle and its a dream to operate.

Nice part of everything being on the tiller is with a small light weight boat you can use an extension handle and move yourself up to the middle seat. With the weight now centered your rig will fly across the water when you are in a hurry.

the new yamaha's don't have the shift on the side anymore it's been like that for about 5or6 years they mounted it right on the tiller itself so u don't have to move but your fingers and i don't need to use a extension as i will distribute the weight properly which most peole do not do and i don't know why it is very easy to do so now what is your opinion after hearing that, just curious.u seem like a smart fellow andi will probally honestly put this motor up for sale and see what i can get for it and buy a brand new one because when i buy things i maintain it like gold and i know exactly what has been done to it.i don't have alot of money and i take care of all my toys and they all look like brand new.ok hope u get back

Here I is again :)

You sound exactly like me when taking care of our toys!

Most outboards are pretty much the same other than an Etec which is of a different technology than the average two stroke. There are not a lot of 2 strokes being made anymore other than Etec.

Hands down I would get what ever is newer just because of resale. They are both great motors. The Merc has a bigger dealer network which is also good for resale. who doesn't have a merc shop in their town or very near by.

I'm in the market for another boat and trying to locate a specific model a few years old. What ever outboard that is on there will be going for sale on Craigslist, because I trust no one when it comes to how they took care of their outboard. I don't mind buying the boat a few years old, but the outboard for me is going to be new because I enjoy keeping everything I own like new.

When I bought this last one new in 2007, I think I went with Merc because it was lighter than the Yamaha. At one point I think Yamaha in certain years was making the heads for some Merc for models over 30 hp anyway.

Go with the 2008!

Re: 25 2 stroke merc or yamaha 25 2 stroke

I am going to look at it this weekend and he sent me a bunch of pics and the motor was so clean on the outside and under the cowl not one drop of corrosion on it peroid that is a good indicator it has not been used much i'm no expert but u can't do to much damage to a new outboard unless your an idiot u know what i'm saying even a monkey could use a tiller motor.it has a fin on the cavitation plate and i asked him why and he said when the baot turns at hi speeds it skips and sucks air under the prop and belive that cause mine di that on a 12ft jon boat.so the fin helps the boat grip the water i should say the prop.these motors sell for about $2750.00 new here so i can get prob about $1500 to $2000 in between and if not i will keep it till i get what i want and i wanna buy the new 25etec i got a guy who sells them just the manual for $2560.00 and that is cheap if u ask me.well thanks for advice u wanna get back let me here all u have to say.i see u like to write me to.thanks
