Basically i have the opportunity to buy a moored boat minus the outboard currently on it for $6000 AUS which is about $4k american..

It is a 25' Flybridge Cruiser and it is currently moored in saltwater

A boat like that with outboard attached on the water ready to go usually goes for about $23,000 AUS (16K US). This boat would require a 250+hp motor to get it moving right? So if i were to pick up lets say a 1998 or so yamaha or mercury for about $4-5K US and spend $1000 to get it on (steering etc etc) and strap it on would the boat be economical.. Would the boat plane out? Lets say i would need to travel about 30miles in one boat trip (total) how much petrol would i look at using if the condition were not the best but not the worst you know :)

Thanks

A single 250 outboard on a 25' flybridge is just barely enuff power, in my opinion.. If it were I, i'd be looking at twin 150's to hang on there, at the very least... Also, not knowing the weight of the boat is a big factor...

Fuel consumption will probably be about 1 to 2 miles per gallon..

If you want "economical" go with something that has diesel inboards..

175 or 200hp yamaha didn't note it down :/

Can you mount 2x 150outboards next to eachother one one transom or would modifications have be done or an extension?

but if there are 2x 150hp outboards they would weigh around 1 and a half what a 250hp outboard would weigh and so the 50hp gained because of the 2 outboards would be lost due to weight?

Boats are ridiculously expensive in Australia ;( This boat is a real bargain and it requires minimal work on the hull im looking at a full days work to get it up to scratch and that includes polishing it..

How much do those bolt on brackets usually cost that allow you to strap 2 outboards. The bracket comes out backwards around a foot and is bolted onto the transom and the 2 outboards are strapped to it

Another quick point y2j.
Go to tradingpost.com.au
When you get the home page, hit "marine".
You will find a lot of 2nd Hand motors advertised for sale, to give you some idea of their prices.
Up here, they call the attachments you use to fit outboards to such boats "pods". Your local Marine dealer will price them for you.
Cheers
Phillip

Fibreglass Sandwich with ply in the middle..
Age around 20 years the boat kinda looks like a bertram but it isn't. Its a Customcraft constructed in NZ

Would the boat be so severly underpowered with a 250hp hanging off theback.. I see lots of 23-28' boats with just 115hp's to 200hp's on the back

This boat would be mainly used for bay fishing and maybe the venture 3km offshore sometimes but not through bars

y2j - On the petrol - the rule of thumb for an outboard no matter what the sise is 1 gallon/10 hp/hour at WOT so 250 hp = 25 gal /hr.

What was the origonal power? If an I/O or inboard do a lot of research befor comitting. Many conversions do not work well.

OK. So it is going to be possibly around the 2.5 to 3 ton mark.
Most similar boats out here have something like a 228hp mercruiserI/O - that being the origonal set-up.
There are a couple in our Marina that have been repowered. One has a 225hp outboard, the other a 250hp outboard. I understand they are no quicker than the origonal I/O set ups.
In some cases it is cheaper to repower with a 2nd hand outboard rather than rebuit a shagged I/O as there are a lot of big, not very old outbaords on the market. They are ex commercial operators motors with very high hours (like off boats servicing the Great Barrier with tourists).I was told some of them did around 3,000hrs a year.
To get some idea what others are doing, go to the website, boatpoint.com.au go to boats for sale and enter in your details. You will see what other 25' Cruisers are powered with and how much they are selling for.
If you are getting it for only Aud$6,000 then you are on a winner, because that is way way below what others are selling for. It is not "hot" is it. :D
You can check that if you wish.
Good luck
Cheers
Phillip
