25 h.p. Evinrude dropping cylinder while at trolling speed.

Hey guys, I have a 1973 Evinrude 25 h.p. that runs great at w.o.t., but when idled down it will occasionally drop 1 cylinder at idle to slow trolling speed. If the throttle is accelerated, it will again fire on both cylinders...all day if you want. This is getting very aggrevating, as most of my fishing is done at trolling speed. I replaced points and cond. 2 years ago, but it has been problematic at times since. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Rick

If it's really dropping a cylinder and re-gaining the cylinder when you accelerate, there is a bad connection someplace. Probably a coil wire or spark plug wire. Follow the wires under the ignition plate and look for a chaffe. If you can run it on muffs, run it in the dark. That'll show you where the short is.

My 15hp did the same thing, the points gap on that cylinder was too tight. It ran on both at high speed and only 1 at low speed. Gap should be 0.020".

Loading up on the upper cylinder was very common on that model, even when brand new. Send me a PM if you want to know how to fix it.
