I have a '78 25 hp evinrude that when I have it at idle speed, especially in neutral, it will cough and shut off. When this happens the bulb is usually limp and needs to be pumped again. When I pump it back up it will Idle good for a couple of seconds, then cough and shut down again. I had a boat shop repair the power head to get it running so I am sure it is not a carb or fuel pump problem. I also replaced the bulb. The hose looks good, the clamps are tight and the line connectors don't leak. This shutting down is really bad when I am trying to trailer my boat at a busy landing by myself with a 10 knot current. Thanks for all the help you can give me.

Re: 25 hp evinrude rough idle

It sounds like your fuel pump is not working correctly. If you place your fuel tank above your engine, see if it runs any better. Also see if your fuel tank is vented properly. Unscrew the cap and see if it runs any longer too.

I'm surprised that the boat repair shop turned the motor back to you, before making sure it runs properly, but then again, half of the mechanics in the dealorships/shops are a bunch of friggin morons. This is bad, but then again, that is how I got a lot of my business. Personally, I would go back and have the idiots make it right. Why use your valuable time here?

Ibentz, the only time I have been wasting is by reading your post padding reply. I have gotten a lot of great help from iboats threads since I started this restoration. The reason why I am asking is because when I brought the motor to the shop, I only brought him the motor because I was restoring the boat. So I am sure he used one of his tanks and hoses to run the motor. I don't think he is a "friggin moron" because he has done good work for me in the past and has a good reputation in the area. I will try holding the tank over the motor, that sounds like something good to try, thank you, but before I bring everything back to him; boat, motor, and fuel tank, I want to make sure this is not something that I should have fixed first.
