Hello my 83 Evinrude 25 hp (E25RCTE) will not shut off, when I push the shorting switch it slows the RPM's down but never kills it completely. I have cleaned the switch contacts and check ground, everything looks good. Any ideas? Thanks

Take the switch apart and make sure that the wire is connected well. Check the other end too. make sure that is hasn't been pinched somwhere.

I have had the switch completely apart, cleaned internal contacts and checked wires. The switch ohms out good and shorts the circut like it should according to my meter. I have taken the other end apart and sprayed with contact cleaner. All seems to be in order but still not working, like I said it will slow the RPM's down when you push the switch but not enough to kill the motor. FYI: this is a manual start tiller. Thanks

The kill switch works by connecting the black/yellow powerpack kill wire to ground. Since you've eliminated the switch it has to be a wiring fault - a nearly open circuit - could be inside the insulation.

Trace the black/yellow back to the powerpack, make sure it' s making good contact inside the plug.

With the engine running, use a jumper wire to connect the ground side of the switch directly to the engine block and push the button. If that kills it, then the problem is with the ground wire.

Unplug the powerpack, push the black/yellow pin out of the connector, plug the pack back in. Check the pin connection to the wire for corrosion & looseness. With the engine running use a jumper wire to connect the kill wire to the engine block. If that works, the problem is between the plug and the switch. If it doesn't it's between the the plug and the powerpack.

good luck.

Re: 25 hp Evinrude won't shut off

I had this same problem with my 1988 Rude. Having some electrical experience, I used my Ohm meter. I found a large hat pin in my wife's sewing basket. I pulled the kill switch apart in the throttle handle, and exposed both leads. I then started down the leads with the pin penitrating the wire insulation, while the other end of my meter at the wire termination at the switch. I finally found the wire break just where the joint is when the handle is raised. The up/down movement broke the wire. I pulled new wires back from the engine. I also machined out the handle opening with my Dremel tool to minimize the angle. Good luck.

Re: 25 hp Evinrude won't shut off

Sorry for the late reply but I just got the boat out again for the year. After confirming the switch was working perfect I replaced the power pack and the engine shuts off every time. $106 + tax for the genuine BRP/Evinrude/Johnson power pack (new superceded part number is 0582452) as of 7-18-07. Thanks for the help
