Hello fellows,

This is a question that has been nagging at me. I have a '98 25 hp 4 str. Merc/Mariner. I read somewhere that the motor, when put on the garden hose should pee when the motor has had a chance to warm up. No muffs are required as there is a fitting on the rear to fit the hose. I would have thought that it would be critical for it to go out the pee'er in order to fully flush the moter of salt etc.

I have never seen the pee'er stop while the moter is in the water despite some posts that say that they will cut in and out as the moter warms. Mine starts and does'nt stop while in the water but the water only runs out the ports on the foot while on the hose even when warm. It's been like it since I've had it.

Why is that?

Thanks

I do not know your motor but am sure you will get someone who does. My thought are that port for hose is to flush the engine without the motor runing. Many new motors have this. Not sure if you should be running motor with hose hooked there, it may not supply water to your water pump. What does your owners manual say?? If you use the muffs it should pee. One last though, I have seen some motors that out of the water water output drains very well with no back pressure so get very little water out upper exhaust ports.
I do not know your motor so this is just some ideas. Really like to know what your owners manual says.

hi newhook. i have a 2003 honda 40hp that has an adapter to hook it up to a garden hose to flush out coolant passages while motor is not running. to run motor with this hose fitting ,my manual says to put tape over all water intake ports before running.this is to create a enough suction to pull it up to powerhead,i use a heavy masking type tape that works well.also running motor with out proper circulation [peeing] will burn up water pump impellor. hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies fellows.

The manual says to simply put on the hose and start her up. It says not to run her at anything more than an idle and not to have the hose on more than 1/2 full but that is it.

Anyone with the same engine or similar out there?

That "do not have hose on over 1/2" is a relative statement. Your water pressure in the hose may be low. Try giving it more water.

Is the fitting you plug into reducing significantly the inside diameter of the hose? In which case you probably cannot get sufficient water into the engine. My thoughts, is that it is always safer to run up the motor in a deep tub or dustbin. Incidentally I have added a bit of antifreeze solution when doing this before winter layup as I was told it coats the water ways and serves as an anti corrosive agent.
If you do not get water out of the pee hole be very wary or you may be doing damage as highlighted by others.
Andy

Walker and Andy,

I've turned up the hose and there is no difference. I have 80 psi and lots of water volume from the hose. The attachment on the moter is about 1/4 inch across. I do not think that there is much of a restriction. Lots of water comes out the foot.

I have not tried a bucket but I am sure that there would be no problem if I did. Still left with the question of whether this is normal....

new hook stop now or say goodbye to the impeller! try putting type over the inlet holes, if that does not work ditch the quick connect and use muffs.

Muffs have worked great for years.
Some marketing person came up with the idea of a quick flush connection, new inovation more sales.
New is not allways better.
Get a set of muffs.
