25 hp pullstart Mercury pulls back when trying to start

The last three times I have had my old - 83 - pull start Merc out, after trying to start it for several minutes, the pull rope suddenly starts stopping suddenly or, worse, jerks back out of my hand. OUCH!! Took it to repair shop where they replaced a broken part, but that didn't fix it. Any ideas!!

sounds like the key have sheared that aligns the flywheel to the crankshaft for proper timing, the pull back is a back fire and the preignition is what is hurting your hand, I have had several lawn mower engines with this same problem....hope this helps..

also if hard to start is a dead give away to a shearded flywheel key...

jhcreech, thanks for the reply. The guy who "fixed" it told me that he checked the key and it was fine, but when it kept occuring, I was dubious. I am going to take it to someone else this time. Thanks, again! Tommy

its hard to find agood tech, i would say their is a timing issue with your motor, good luck with it...
