I am thinking about buying a yamaha outboard 25 hp tiller handle electric start 2 stroke. The guy I am interested in buying from got compression tests done today and the 1st cylinder came back as 95-96 the 2nd cylinder came back as 96-97. He also said wet the compression tests said 108 together??? He is asking 1000 for it and I just wanted to know if this was a motor that seemed mechanically sound? and if the price seemed right for a good running motor?

Also, the serial number is 25ESHQ and I also would like to know what that meant as far as what the year of the motor was?

Thanks!

Re: 25 hp yamaha outboard

Donnie,
That yamaha outboard is a 1992 year, as far as the compression goes i really dont have info on what the #'s would be.
I have a 2006 F25 that i bought last year for $2000 with remote controls, full tilt&trim.
See if you can run it on the water if possible to get a feel for the motor also listen to the motor and if everything sounds fine its up to you to buy or pass.
gd luck

Low compression will usually show up as a crappy idle, so if it idles smoothly the compression is probably fine since the numbers are very close (the most reliable thing shown by a compression test since guages vary so much on actual numbers). Those are good motors. Check the lower unit oil for water. Black is o.k. but needs changing. Clear oil is great. COffee looking oil or water is bad. If you can run it wide open you could tell if the clutch dog will hold gear at that speed, which is also a big problem on a used motor.

$1000 sounds high for my area for a 1992 25 but they are good motors and hard to find, so he might get it (or you might have to pay that).
Listen to the shifting, especially in reverse, to try to discern if the clutch dog is worn. Better yet, ride with the seller and watch him operate. If he shifts slowly into gear, leave. If he uses reverse for a brake, routinely and at speed, leave. Or drop the price by the cost of a rebuild.
Replace the water pump first thing, unless he has done it recently and you trust his work.

Re: 25 hp yamaha outboard

The compression sounds a little low to me even know they are close in numbers.I have tested probally over 25 25hp 2stroke yamahas from all yrs even a 1990 and i have never got below 100 before unless there was a problem.Over 95% of them came back in the range of 117 to 124.What i mean is a good motor would never go below 117lbs in pressure and on the top end they would hit around 124lbs.As long as they stay above 100lbs and are within 10%of eachother it should be ok from what i have been told by a very good friend and mechanic.

Like i said though most of the ones i have checked were usually 120 on each cylinder. Also $1000 is very steep for a 19yrs old motor. It better be very clean were you can eat off of it.Make sure it pumps good water and the lower unit has clean lower unit oil in it no milky white color, check to make sure the compression is good and you should be good to go.That is what i do when i buy and sell motors. If you need anymore help let me know i will help you if i can.But look on craigslist and you will find a way better deal, just be patient.

I think if cranked electric compression should exceed 100.
Also while these are good motors You might check for availability of parts.
Routine parts for evinrude johnson motors back to the 1950s are available right here at iboats,NAPA auto parts and the many well established E/J BRP dealers.
