fine as in not stuck, broken off or missing. swing arms are moving and springing back freely.
3 wire units.

hello
test the resistance between the pink and the black sensor wires, should be around 500 ohms, by memory the exact spec escapes me. then test black to orange while moving the lever should be about 800 to 1200 ohms. could be a sensor failure or a harness failure. could be a tach failure. time to start testing.

both sending units checked out ok.
the three switches on the controlls work fine.
i disconected both sending units, and trim swiches on the engines. same thing, all the black bars are lit up on both gauges with key on or running.
i shut the batteries off to one engine at a time. same thing both gauges pegged.
i found the port engine switch on the motor is not working. no power coming to switch but that shouldn't have anything to do with the starboard motor? right??
mike

the trim switches that actuate the trim system have nothing at all to do with the gauge. dont play with your battery switches with the engine running. its a good way to find out how expensive yamaha regulators and other electrical components cost. now go under the dash . disconnect the 4 wire plug at the tach with the orange, pink, black and gray leads. do the same test for resistance you did for the sender, should have the same results. do all tests with the key off. there are no voltage specs for the orange wire out of the tac. but you should have aa stable voltage of about 5 v with the key on and the voltmeter between the black and orange wires on the tach side of the connector. the pink is a pick off voltage feed back from the sender. black is ground and orange is a reference voltage.

Check carefully for connection problems under the dash. If the leads at the dash from the sender check ok, I would suspect loss of a ground in the under dash harness.
