I have a 1995 Johnson 200 Ocean Runner,on ky last outing It suddenly sputtered and would not go above 2500 rpm. I'm pretty sure it's a safety switch that's doing this I'm not sure which direction to go at it I have a Seloc Manuel for the outboard.I'm not finding the symptom in the trouble shoot area in the book.I am a fair mechanic when it comes to cars and stuff out boards have been kinda scary to go at so now I'm ready to accept my fears, lol. any help would be much appreciated. Thank You Bob

Re: 2500 @wot

Overheating. It is going into SLOW mode. It was limited to 2500 rpm, and ran real rough, like shaking a bit, right?

Get a laser temp gun on each head when it is exhibiting the problem and verify.
The head temps warmed up and running should be around 140 F.
No laser temp gun available, you should be able to put your hand/palm on the top flat of each head for a few seconds before it gets too uncomfortable to hold there any longer.

Look for normal faults that would cause overheating, like stuck/bad thermos, water pump, blocked water pickup, excessive accumulation of crap in the block and heads, or possible and lastly, look for a wiring fault that is falsely triggering SLOW mode.

Time to give the engine's cooling system a real good examination.
