Hi All -
I have a dilema that I am having a hard time rationalizing. I just heard from my marine mech that the presumed lower seal job is not that, but a replacement of the entire lower unit. He says that he cannot get the housing off the lower unit (something like that). I'm handy on cars but this is all greek). I was quoted $1,600 for a new (Merc) lower unit & water pump & labor. Does this seem a fair price?
This engine is an 2004 25HP 2 Stroke. It use to be a tender for a larger boat and mech claims (& I believe) that salt has corrorded / fused some items inside causing severe harm. I can't get over the fact that this is suppose to last decades and has lasted 7 years (& not much use in the last 3 years and only fresh water).
I am thinking of dumping this (can it be traded in "as is") for a new 4 stroke? It's th good money after bad logic. My thoughts are to go to a Yamaha -- I just can't get over the fact that this died so rapidly. Am I over reacting to a previous's owner's mistakes vs. inferor product design on Merc's part?
Seems as if I can get something with a little more HP for $3k - $4.5k with a warranty. Obviously more, but I know what I have at that point.
Your comments are welcome.
