Warning!! Don't use Champion's current spark plug chart! It's is full of errors bent on destroying old OMC outboards! Use the BRP one, faithfully reproduced here:
http://www.boatsetup.com/SparkPlugChart.pdf
If you want it from the "Horses Mouth", you can also find it in the E/J Service Parts Catalog (published by BRP) at ishopmarine.com. It's slightly older though.

Use a champion J4C or if you troll a lot you can try a Champion J6C. A J8C is far too hot a plug.

Re: 25hp evinrude 1971

I don't know when Champion revised their charts, but it seems like we got a spate of incorrect J8C plugs showing up in the J/E repair section starting about the spring of last year. It didn't take too long to figure out where the bad information was coming from. I'm not sure if it's correct about other models/years, but it seems like they switched all the engines that require J6C/J4C to J8C.
Some of the old 50s 5hp and such do actually use the J8C, and I suppose you could make a case for them on the 3s and other J6C engines. Some of the J4C requiring engines will certainly not appriciate them though.
