Fished all day yesterday and my older 25hp johnson sea horse ran great. Started her up to come back to the hill and we started loosing speed after a couple of minutes. Looked back and it stopped pissin. I immedialey shut down and tried to clean out the pee hole, hose and intake. The motor was pretty hot. After I cleaned it out I could not get it started back up. When I try to crank it up now it just back fires a couple of times and won't turn over. It is definately trying to start up but can't. I don't know if it was clogged, water pump, etc. because I can't even get it started back up. What do you all think? Thanks

Make sure that the water intake is clear.

If clear, you probably have a worn out impeller...which may have disintegrated and clogged up your cooling. When was the last time it was replaced...if it's three years or older replace the impeller.

It overheated pretty badly.
Check the compression. The readings should be within 10 percent of one another. If you're lucky it's just the head gasket.

The impeller needs to be changed, if the motor was not obviously clogged up with weeds and such.

if compression does not check well does that mean the cylinders are done? At what point would you just get a new motor? If I do decide to get a new motor, what would you sell this one for as is? Thanks

Re: 25hp Johnson Issues

Compression was 50,55 in the two cylinders
Pretty low.....probably time to order a new head gasket, but take the head off first and see how the cylinders look. With some luck you'll find that the head gasket blew between the two cylinders. Without luck, well we won't go there yet....
