Hi There. Although I don't know the model number (and therefore age) of this engine i know it is the same as this 25hp two stroke http://www.marinepower.com/products/single/2006$$$EN-$-MA$2S$F250-2_5$MA2S_25

The boat is nearly impossible to turn at speed and i've been investigating the problem - most of my leads came from this forum!

The boat is pretty heavy (FunYak 45C) and the recommended horsepower is 50. The boat belongs to my local sailing club and it always struggles to get on the plane. It is more often than not driven hard in incompetent hands and I think this is the root cause of the problem. I would appreciate your feedback on my thoughts! Because the motor is not powerful enough to move the boat properly I think it compresses its lower mount which has since worn. This is reinforced by two facts - firstly the boat turns easily when at high speed and is put into neutral and also the motor is seen to tilt in a large amount when power is applied.

What do you guys think? Am I right in thinking that a proper sized motor the best solution?

Sorry this is such a marathon - thanks for your time.

I'm gonna say yes, a properly sized motor will make things better all around. It sounds like it is hard to turn only when getting on plane and that it struggles to do that for the most part. That sounds normal for your situation. A larger motor would get it on plane real quick if set up right and eliminate the steering problem for the most part. You may want to try adding a hydrofoil to pop it up on plane quicker in the meantime and see how that does...But nothing can make up for horsepower...
