I was given a 25 horse mariner, which I'm told by the previous owner was run with straight gas no oil. I'm planning a rebuilt but need to know the year, I found the following numbers on the powerhead:
M163181309
827362A40
I assume these are the model and serial numbers, also I found 25MH/MLH. 25 is the horsepower but what does the MH and MLH represent.

About the rebuild: I heard that this motor may be a "jug" motor, in that to rebuild the powerhead the entire crank, pistons, rods, etc. all come out as a unit and its difficult (without proper tools) to get everything back together. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Dave

You will have to tear the engine down before you order any parts...as you have stated it was run with no oil..this is not a good thing.

TMD

I bet its all sheered up. Yeah, After taking the powerhead apart, the crankshaft and pistons come out as one unit. Good luck.

thanks for the offer for more advice, I'm sure I'll need it if I do this myself. I was going to order a repair manual and parts manual as soon as I know the year model, is there any way I can get this information from the numbers in the first post?

it may well be more economical to just order an exchange powerhead...
andrew
