25hp Merc handle grip throttle slipping

Hello,
First time here.
I have a 2000 year 25hp 2stroke with manual steering and throttle.
The handle grip slips around and you have to play with it to find neutral. Sometimes after finding neutral and starting the engine, the grip is already rotated so far that there is no room left to give it gas.
I can't see how to take it apart to see what's wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? Can you help?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,

On the starboard side of the engine you can see the two cables with the twisted wire coming out of them going to your shift and throttle. Look for the nuts holding them to the plate. You can adjust the nuts to tighten up the cable slop and adjust the shift point on the handle with this method.

Thanks for the reply. That wasn't the issue. The cables were fine. The handle was slipping around on the tube assembly that runs through the tiller. I couldn't understand how to get the assembly out of the tiller.
Well, I figured it out. It's not hard to do. After getting it apart I see the tubing is knurled on the end and a plastic piece is just jammed on, then the handle goes over that. The knurled part wasn't gripping the plastic good enough. I drilled a hole through it, and pushed a piece of wire through for a pin.
So far it holds good. I can't believe Mercury made it that way. But then again there is a lot of plastic all over the engine. They just don't make things like they used to.

Hi,

That is interesting. I can't say I have seen that before.
You could always glue in a hardened pin in the hole if the wire breaks.
your right about a lot of plastic in the newer engines. For the most part it is a good thing as far as corrosion resistance goes, but it does have some limitations.
