1985 25XD manual outboard.
Would anybody know if there is a way to tighten up the steering tension.
The mid section and the mount is completely missing form the SELOC repair manual.

Re: 25XD steering tension adjustment?

Mapss,

Yes there is. If I can remember correctly, it's at the top of the transom mounting bracket on the right side of the motor. I will look tonight and send you a picture or detailed description.

I maxed the tension out so it made it a little easier to hold onto the tiller handle. Please let me know how you fixxed your pulling tiller handle problem.

Thanks.

Re: 25XD steering tension adjustment?

It turned out to be the side rubber pads in the lower motor mount were giving a LITTLE. I fliped them over and switched sides. That LITTLE tilt realy does a job on these Mercs.
I will check for that screw
Thanks

Looked at the motor and still cannot find anything adjustable.
I talked to a general Marine Mechanic and he looked at a 15hp and was puzzled on where the adjustment is.
Also on the "25XD pulling to one side" I have a description on the repair I did on that post.

Re: 25XD steering tension adjustment?

Hey Mapss,

I looked at my 20 hp last night. The friction adjustment is not on the right side as I stated earlier, its on the Left side (looking at the motor standing behind it) at the very top, where the motor and the transom mount meet, above the grease zerk fitting. It is a flat blade (screw driver) screw at a slight angle.

Let me know if you can't find it and I will take a picture of mine and email it to you.

Re: 25XD steering tension adjustment?

The screw on mine has a spring to help keep it adjusted. By the way, how do those friction screws work?, i.e., is there a friction pad or something inside the casing, or does the screw tip just rub on something. The reason I ask is that on my '88 25hp, the screw doesn't seem to do anything to increase friction (my steering is always super loose) no matter how much I tighten it and I was wondering if something needs replacing.
