270 u-joint bearings stuck!!!

I've had this 1969 Glasply with a 225 V6 Buick engine and 270 outdrive for about three years, and every year I keep hitting a roadblock that keeps me off the water. I'm relatively new to boating, and I'm learning everything the hard way. After searching the forums, I've discovered I should have changed the u-joint bellows right when I got the boat, but I didn't, and now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to get the PDS bearings out.
When I pulled the upper unit, I immediately saw the ball bearings and metal shavings in the bellows, so I knew I had a big issue. Now that I have everything off, how do I get the remains of the bearings out?
The flywheel housing looks pretty dirty. Is there anything else I need to look for, and what do I do to clean it up?
Thanks for any help in advance. I'm hoping this won't take too much time or special tools. I have a cheapo harbor freight slide hammer, but it isn't doing me much good.

If that is the outer race stuck in there, and you can get a slide hammer behind it, you can get it out. If you cant get behind it you can carefully dremmel a grove on it to split the race and it will come right out.

Thanks Grub. I haven't been able to get my slide hammer to grab it. I'll try the Dremel trick next.

Stop! Going to require pulling the engine and changing both bearings. One comes out the engine side of bellhousing. I just did this on my 280 drive.

Pull the motor, remove PDS housing, replace bearings
You guys make it sound too easy to pull the motor, but I've never done anything like this before. I have a 1996 Buick V6 225 dauntless oddfire engine, which I understand to be an odd combination with 270 outdrive. Is there anything else I need to remove other then the motor mounts and the flywheel bolts to pull the engine? I have a closed cooling system if it makes a difference. Do I probably have that water intake fitting that needs to be replaced? Thanks again for your responses.

I think I pulled all the bolts, but I can't get the engine to budge. I don't have a real engine crane, but I have a chain wrapped around the engine mounts with a large ratchet strap routed over the roof truss of my shop. I still can't get the thing to budge. Are there any tricks to get the engine to break free from the flywheel housing and the engine mounts. The pic shows the engine mount. There is a stud with a nut on either side. I've only taken off the top nut, and I can't get the stud to budge either.

no no no

you leave the PDS on the motor when you pull the motor, you remove after the motor is out.

you already have the drive removed which is the hardest part.

now disconnect the throttle cable, fuel lines, harness plug, take the 6 bolts out of the PDS clamp ring (back of boat), jack the clamp ring off with 3 of the six bolts in the threaded holes. take the 2 nuts of the mounts and lift motor out. your about 20 minutes away from pulling the motor.

water intake fitting needs to be replaced every few years (when you do the bellows)

Do I need to remove the clamp ring to remove the engine and change the bearings? I'd rather not have to replace the doughnuts, but will if it's required.

I think the PDS came out with the u-joint. The pic shows what came out with u-joint (the PDS and part of a bearing).

Yes, you need to remove the clamp ring.

to properly rebuild the PDS, you will need it out anyway, even if your failed bearings allowed the shaft to come out.

I think I stripped the threaded holes in the clamp ring that are supposed to be used to jack the clamp ring off. Is this a semi-common problem?
I'm thinking my only option is to retap the holes to jack the ring off with bigger bolts. Is there a better option that anybody can think of?
Note the threads are still on the bolts, but there are stripped threads.

you should have just been able to give eash one about a 1/4 turn then on to the next, working aorund the clamp ring. usually 2-3 times around and it pops loose.
