ok i will start by saying i've been sort of pirating off other peoples posts and threads. I will attempt to include my whole project in one thread here, as my small simple hole in my bellows has sprouted into a monster of sorts. Ok I have found what many have found by being suspicious over a broken bellows covering the drive shaft. I need any help you guys can give any advise please. I do not want to put this thing back together only to be tearing it down again. This is what i've done in steps. first i removed the upper box to replace bellow. found u joints worn. not bad just not acceptable to me. so i ordered and replaced them and have new bellow. While replacing u-joints i removed the piece that was in my way to access the yoke on the gear box side. found corroded and damaged shims and o-ring. ordered all that.next my water pickup tube gasket was shot. so i saw a pic on here about how they will corrode so i took mine off and as pics show its gone too. ordering that tomorrow. Is there anything you guys see that im over looking? also the splined shaft coming from the transom plate has very little almost no side play. feels very solid. thanks in advance for any help.

Assuming you took the double bearing box out of the clamp ring, you REALLY need to get new shims and have the back lash and preload checked to make sure it's set to specs.
Here's a link to the service manual that explains how to do it.

You need a new water hose connector and make sure you get the old pieces out of the hose. And cover up the top of the drive so dirt doesn't get into it.

You can then start the engine and listen for noise from the bearings in the flywheel cover. If they are noisy, you MUST pull the engine and replace them. If they fail completely, it can and will take out the whole housing.

ok Don i looked at the manual. i removed the clamp ring held in place by four very tight allen head bolts. thats where i found the corroded shims. i did not disasemble any parts in the bearing box. i never loosened any bolt or retaining nut on any gearset or shaft from any assembly. the shims only put the correct preload on that one bearing from what i can see. i used a micrometer and measured my shims and ordered replacements. i was really hoping that i could just reinstall o-ring and shims and torque the bolts and be done. i guess i was wrong huh? :)
