28 HP oil leak.jpg
This is my Evinrude 28 HP. It has oil coming from a hole just to the right of the prop in the pic, the plug on the right that you see is where the lower unit oil is checked. I am not sure what the hole is used for but it is pre drilled and the oil as you can see is running down the lower unit. Why is oil coming from this hole and where would it be coming from? I can try to clean it and get a better pic of the hole if that would help. I have a video showing it better but It wont let me upload it.

That wee hole is there to make sure no water sits in there.----In cold climates that could crack the housing.----Often times after long periods of idling you will see oil coming out of there as well.---This is the oil that was mixed with the gas.-------If you are worried about a leak in the lower unit , then have the gearcase pressure tested.----Is there any water present at the bottom drain screw for the lower unit ?

From what I can tell from the pic, it looks like to much oil. Have the gear case pressure tested to be on the safe side.

OK I went and looked at the motor and all of that in the pic was gone off of the lower unit. I ran it again submerged and took it out of the water and it wasn't coming out as bad this time. It must be just water leaking with some mixed gas mixed in it. it was foamy and when I ran my finger thru it my finger didn't have oil on it. I checked the oil in the lower unit and it looked fine. I just have never seen it do this before so it had me worried.

Re: 28 HP oil leak

Racerone pointed out above, that is a weep hole to drain the gearcase cavity of water. What you see it totally normal, no worries. 2 strokes don't compeletely burn off the fuel/oil mix, the unburnt stuff is shot out with the exhaust. In your gearcase, there are cavities and such in the casting, at the bottom of those cavities are those small holes you see drilled to drain the gearcase after pulling it out of the water to ensure it does not crack in the winter. There would be a problem if you did NOT see any goo running out of those holes when you pull the motor out, that would mean they are plugged and needs to be cleaned out. Seeing the goo means they are clear and open as they should be.
