280 DP Steering

Hi all, I'm new to boating and to the forums, but I'm not afraid to tackle anything mechanical.
I just bought a '79 Charger Offshore with a 7.4L and 280DP. The boat is in good shape and runs very well. But, I'm not happy with the steering, it has some slop in it. I can clearly see play in the yoke bearing/bushing. I would like to replace/rebuild the some of the steering components inside the transom. I have 2 questions;
1. Where can I download a parts manual? I've looked high and low and can't find anything. I did manage to find a service manual, but that's it.
2. Where can I buy parts for it?

This leads me to my next question. The original engine was changed out a few years back and it no longer has the tag on it. Everything I see wants the engine serial number.
The other issue is the Volvo-Penta website doesn't work too well and it will not let me do a search for a dealer so I can get help from them.
Can I get info based on the sterndrive tag?

from the volvo penta store, look up your local dealer and use the drive searial number (tag at top of upper gear box)
